Why ventilation matters more in Texas
An attic without adequate airflow can run considerably hotter than the outside air on a summer afternoon in Dallas, and that trapped heat bakes the underside of the shingle from below at the same time the sun is heating it from above. Over years, that double exposure shortens a shingle's functional life well below its rated age.
The same problem raises cooling costs, since a hot attic radiates heat down into the living space below it, making the air conditioning work harder than it should through a long Texas summer.
Ridge and soffit, working together
The most reliable ventilation setup pairs a continuous ridge vent at the top of the roof with open soffit vents at the eaves, letting cooler outside air enter low and push hot air out high. Gable vents alone, common on older Richardson and Garland homes, do not create that same steady airflow across the underside of the deck.
The general target is one square foot of net free vent area per three hundred square feet of attic floor, split evenly between intake and exhaust. A roof with plenty of ridge vent but blocked or insulated-over soffits does not actually achieve balanced airflow, no matter how much ridge vent is installed.
Signs of a ventilation problem
A visibly hot attic in summer, uneven or accelerated shingle wear concentrated on one section of roof, and higher-than-expected cooling bills are all signs worth investigating. Sometimes the cause is as simple as insulation that has been blown up against the soffit vents, blocking the intake side entirely without anyone realizing it.
When to address it
A re-roof is the cheapest moment to correct ventilation, since the ridge is already being opened for new shingle anyway. On an existing roof that is not due for replacement, adding or clearing soffit vents and cutting a ridge vent can usually be done without disturbing the field shingle, making it a worthwhile standalone improvement.
